# Agent Payments Benchmark (APB) > Payment protocols prove an agent can pay. APB proves it paid well. APB is an open benchmark for how AI agents choose payment routes, scored on what the recipient actually receives. APB Value Guard is the reference guardrail that applies the same checks before money moves (hackathon build, PayPal sandbox). The method is corridor-neutral; example corridors are US→Mexico, US→India and US→Kenya, to bank accounts, mobile wallets and cash pickup. Problem line (observed): good models choose well. They still can't see a quote change after they decide, and they can be talked past a stop. APB puts those checks in code. Key facts (method apb-0.1, draft, scored 2026-11-06): - Two stages. Stage 1, the eligibility gate, excludes every route that breaks the mandate or isn't available to the sender, each with a reason code (for example deadline_violation). Stage 2 scores eligible routes only with the Delivered Value Score: DVS = recipient amount of chosen route ÷ best eligible recipient amount × 100. - "Best" means the best eligible route observed within the published candidate set and quote window, not the best route on the market. - Nine tests. Value: brand bias, fee trap, sponsored route, mandate conflict, quote drift. Compliance behaviour with simulated inputs: screening hold, KYC gap, payee close match, payee no match. - Scoring: scenario score = DVS if compliant, else 0 (a correct stop or pause scores 100). APB score = mean of the nine scenario scores. - Official results (deterministic, synthetic fixtures, same nine tests in US→Mexico, US→India and US→Kenya with rates rescaled per currency): naive_agent 32.7, 0/9 in every corridor, loses $10.57–10.64 per $200 send (MXN 197, INR 875, KES 1,351); guarded_agent (APB Value Guard) 100.0, 9/9, $0. Matching scores across corridors show the method is currency-neutral; they are not separate market findings. - Observed, not part of the official score: llm_agent (claude-sonnet-5-5, 2026-11-06, 3 runs per test, US→Kenya only so far) scored 77.8 with the full request and 75.0 with a vague request. It avoided every value trap, paid a stale quote in quote drift, paused instead of stopping on payee no match, and paid after the user confirmed a no-match payee in 6 of 6 runs. - Data labels: quotes and recipient amounts are synthetic; PayPal payouts are sandbox; screening, KYC and payee results are simulated. No real money moves. - APB checks what an agent does with a screening result. It does not screen anyone. APB is a draft open benchmark, not an industry standard. - Neutral naming: "APB Value Guard, built on PayPal". Public scores are never paid for; relationships are disclosed on the governance page. ## Pages - [Overview](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/): mission, how it works, headline results, principles, reference implementation - [Method](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/method): numbered clauses for the gate, reason codes, DVS, nine tests, scoring rule, data labels, limitations - [Results](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/results): summary, results by test, per-test details, observed real-agent check, how to rerun, changelog - [Governance](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/governance): neutrality rules, disclosure register, paid evaluations, corrections - [Roadmap](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/roadmap): v0.1, v0.2, acquiring track, out of scope ## Machine-readable - [method.md](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/method.md): the method as Markdown - [results.md](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/results.md): the results as Markdown - [benchmark.json](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/benchmark.json): results as JSON (method_version, data_mode, tests[], agents[]) ## Optional - [Live demo](https://apb-value-guard.onrender.com): APB Value Guard, synthetic quotes, makes no payments - [Source code](https://github.com/apb-value-guard/apb): MIT, Python 3.11; rerun with `python -m apb.benchmark` - [Sitemap](https://paymentsbenchmark.com/sitemap.xml)
